Biden In Hot Water Sez CNN

Who, exactly writes this drivel?  Apparently Joe Biden made a football-related comment on the trail the other day, stating his alum would kick some Ohio football team’s ass.

Apparently the Republicans were quick to jump on it by saying this:

“As if his comments about it being a patriotic duty for Ohioans to pay higher taxes weren’t bad enough, now Biden is taking pot shots at the Buckeyes,” GOP State chair Bob Bennett said. “Barack Obama and Joe Biden must really think they can win this election without Ohio, because they’re doing their best to lose it with stupid comments like these. Keep talking, Joe.”

Um, Bob, do you think Ohioans are that shallow that they would vote for McCain because Joe Biden supports his home team?  OMG, the world’s coming to an end!!

And I, for one, think Joe Biden was spot on when he said it was your patriotic duty to pay your fair share of taxes.  Republicans are trying to morph his statement into meaning everyone should be paying higher taxes.  Of course, that’s not what Joe said.  He was saying all those fat cats who cheated the rest of us out of our 401K money and are walking away with sweet multimillion dollar severance packages for running their companies into the ground, should do the patriotic thing and cough up a proportionate share of their income.

I’m with Joe on this one.

  1. Joe Biden opened his mouth yesterday, and something foolish came out. We know, dog bites man. But everyone’s talking about what he said, so we thought we’d weigh in too. From the Associated Press:

Biden said Thursday that paying more in taxes is the patriotic thing to do for wealthier Americans. . . .
“We want to take money and put it back in the pocket of middle-class people,” Biden said in an interview on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”
Noting that wealthier Americans would indeed pay more, Biden said: “It’s time to be patriotic . . . time to jump in, time to be part of the deal, time to help get America out of the rut.”
Since Biden is resting his case on patriotism rather than economic efficacy, let’s analyze his statement in those terms.

If paying high taxes is patriotic, then Biden and Barack Obama, in putting forward a plan they claim will result in lower taxes for 95% of Americans, seem to be trying to undermine American patriotism.

In order to avoid this problem, the AP infers that Biden has a double standard in which paying higher taxes is patriotic only for “wealthier” Americans. But it seems odd to say that patriotism demands something of one class of people, while making no such demand on everyone else. You guys, if you want to be patriotic, salute the flag. You guys over there, go ahead and burn it, we don’t care.

What is more, Obama and Biden are not proposing higher taxes in order to serve some common purpose such as national defense. Rather, what they want, as Biden makes clear, is outright redistribution: take money from a minority and give it to “middle-class people.” As Forbes’s Susan Lee notes, many of the Obama-Biden “tax cuts” are actually credits, often “refundable” credits–which is to say, subsidies.

The Obama-Biden tax plan consists in asking a select group of Americans to sacrifice while effectively telling everyone else to go shopping.

Where have we heard this before? And can we really afford four more years of the same?

  2. Yeah, right. You think the uber wealthy in this country should be paying less, percentage-wise, in taxes than the poor guy trying to raise a family on $35K/year? That the uber rich deserve all the loopholes and offshore bank accounts so they don’t have to pay any taxes at all?

Now that’s what I call patriotic. Being so stinking rich you’ll never be able to spend it all in a 1,000 lifetimes, but somehow believing you should pay less in taxes.

Perhaps you aren’t familar with how the middle class came to be. I’d suggest you get a book on the FDR administration and bone up on it. Without a “redistribution of wealth,” there would be a much smaller, if any, middle class in this country. Only the uber-rich and the rest of us peons. Is that what you’d prefer? You can start by reading this article:

And do you belive John McCain and Sarah Palin are going to magically make everything better?! His primary economic advisor has been Phil Gramm, one of the main reasons why we’re in this mess.

Even the rich in this country need the middle class, so we had better begin finding ways to preserve and enhance it.

Can you give one example of how the Bush tax cuts have trickled down to the rest of us?
